§ parts / 4 items + 1 optional · about € 50–60 · no soldering

Shopping list.

Four parts, no soldering if you pick a Pi with headers. Everything plugs together.

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 WRP3A0
A board

Raspberry Pi Zero 2 WH

The default. "WH" means the 40-pin header is already soldered on. A Zero 2 W without header works too if you solder one yourself.

qty 1€ 20–25
B display

Waveshare 2.13″ e-Paper HAT V4

Black and white, 250 × 122 pixels, the same display most Pwnagotchis use. The V4 is the default; the V1, V2 and V3 work too if you pick them on the settings page. The version is printed on the back of the board.

qty 1€ 18–22
microSD
C storage

microSD card, 8 GB or more

The image is small, so any size from 8 GB up is plenty. A name brand card (SanDisk, Samsung, Kingston) saves trouble.

qty 1€ 6–10
D cable

Micro-USB data cable

It powers the gotchi and carries the data. It must be a data cable: many cheap charging cables have no data wires. For a Mac with only USB-C ports, take a USB-C to micro-USB cable.

PiSugar 3
E optional battery

PiSugar 3 (or 3 Plus)

Only if the gotchi should go with you, no cable needed. It screws under the Pi and touches the header through pogo pins, so no soldering. The gotchi finds it on its own, shows the charge and shuts down cleanly before the battery is empty. How to fit it

Prices are a rough guide for Germany in 2026 and vary by shop.

§ 01 / optional

Nice to have.

  • A case. Any Pi Zero case with room for a HAT on top, or a 3D printed one for the 2.13″ e-Paper HAT. Several free designs exist.
  • A PiSugar 3 battery to take the gotchi with you, see E above.
  • A USB power supply (5 V, 2 A, micro-USB) if the gotchi should run away from your computer, for example on Wi-Fi with the cloud relay.
  • A microSD card reader if your computer has no slot, to flash the image.
§ 02 / compatibility

Also works.

  • Raspberry Pi Zero W / WH (the first generation). There is a separate image for it. It is slower, which is fine for a display that refreshes a few times a minute.
  • Other Waveshare displays from Pwnagotchi builds: the 2.13″ V1, V2 and V3, the 2.13″ B V4 (black, white and red) and the 2.7″ V1 and V2. Choose yours under Display on the settings page, or set display in tokibot.toml; Pwnagotchi's names such as waveshare_3 work too. The B V4 and the 2.7″ V1 cannot refresh partially, so they update at most once a minute and without animations. On the 2.7″ the picture sits in the middle with a white margin. All names

Does not work.

  • Smaller displays: the Inky pHAT, PaPiRus, the Waveshare 1.54″ and OLED or LCD HATs. The picture is drawn for 250 × 122 pixels and does not fit.
  • Raspberry Pi 3, 4 and 5. The image targets the Zero boards only.
  • Other batteries and battery HATs. Only the PiSugar 3 is supported.
